The Beginning of a Home Renovation Project
When I started my home renovation project, it felt like the beginning of a new adventure. I’ll never forget pulling up to the house that first day. Let’s just say the home was left in less than ideal conditions, but the visions of a clean, cozy home began. Behind all of the junk, I saw restored hardwoods, freshly painted walls, and new light fixtures. I envisioned a kitchen where people could gather, a living room with a fireplace that invited one to relax, and a bathroom that was both inspiring and functional. But as with any big project, the road is rarely smooth.
The reality is, home renovations are filled with challenges. No matter how much you plan, prepare, and persist, you will encounter roadblocks with unexpected costs, delays, design dilemmas, and the overwhelm of decision fatigue. There’s always one more receipt to document or Menard’s rebate to mail in (not complaining about those rebates though!). Even though challenges are to be expected, it’s essential that you maintain hope and stay determined. Find the people who make you laugh and lift you up when what you thought was fixed, isn’t. Renovating a home reminds me of hiking to the top of a mountain. It’s exhilarating and hard and also incredibly rewarding.
Here are the top ten must-have items when beginning your home renovation project:
The Highs and Lows of Renovation
At the beginning of a home renovation, the highs come easily. You’re brainstorming ideas, choosing the right paint colors, and dreaming about home décor. For the first few months, you’re moving doorways and taping the floor where you could add new walls. Then, reality sets in. How long will that take? What’s that going to cost? Who can make that happen? Sound familiar? I’m remembering the days these exact conversations happened.
*They* say to budget at least an extra 15% of the total cost of renovation for unexpected costs. Honestly, 30% seems a bit more accurate to me. I’ve been blessed with family and friends who have been willing to help, as well as some pretty awesome deals while thrift shopping. But sometimes you have to let go of a great idea to prioritize the ones that really matter, like adding gutters instead of a fancy kitchen island. When you’ve already invested significant time and money into a project, these unexpected costs can be stressful.
Another roadblock you may encounter are delays. Sometimes you’re waiting on contractors, delayed shipment of materials, or complications that are going to take your schedule off track. Weeks might turn into months, so take that time off to do something you love and just choose to enjoy life. Your patience will be tested, but see it as a test and nothing more.
And then the design dilemma. The light is not centered over the shelf, or the wall color is too much for the room. Perhaps you’ve already made approximately 1,754 decisions and find yourself saying things like, “I just don’t care anymore. Someone else pick out curtains.” Welcome to the reality of taking on a large project. As one of my favorite 3-year-old’s says, “You’re going to make it.” Perhaps you’re a better interior designer than you realize.
These are just a few examples of the hurdles you’ll likely encounter. And they can leave you feeling frustrated, exhausted, and, at times, hopeless. However, it’s important to remember that these roadblocks don’t define the success of your project—they are simply part of the process.
How to Remain Hopeful Despite Roadblocks
Renovating a home requires some mental preparation, but it’s possible to remain hopeful. Keep your head up and your end goal in mind. The vision you started with might have taken a new form, but the ultimate goal is the same—a beautiful home that reflects your style and design.
The following image is one of my favorite reminders of what success so often looks like, and home improvement projects are no different. They are rarely, if ever, linear. Setting realistic expectations and taking a step back when needed to allow yourself to rest and have a fresh start with a clear mind are keys to your success.
Be patient and persistent. Things won’t always go according to plan, but don’t give up. Learn to work through the challenges. You never know when an “Oops!” might turn into a “That’s amazing!” Your ability to adapt and pivot will determine how well you finish.
Another tip: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. A wise couple once said, “The key to home renovation is knowing when to call the experts.” DIY projects can be fun and rewarding, but tasks like plumbing and electrical are often best left to experts.
Finally, celebrate constantly! Sometimes it feels like the work is never-ending, but whether it’s demo day or installing the final light fixture, each moment represents progress. Be grateful for what you’ve accomplished and take time to document your home renovation journey. One day you’ll be admiring your new kitchen and relaxing on the couch in your cozy, new living room saying, “Remember when…”
Renovating a Home Is a Journey Worth Taking
Home renovation projects are never easy, but they are always worth it. Roadblocks are a natural part of the process, but with determination, patience, and a focus on your end goal, you can work through any challenge that comes your way. Keep your vision alive, take it one step at a time, and remind yourself that the journey, as difficult as it may seem at times, will eventually lead to the home of your dreams. Whether you’re doing a complete renovation or only focusing on the rooms that are truly in need of renovation, encouraging words from those who’ve been through it will be the motivation you need to stay focused on the finish line.
